Extra Credit Discussion Question #3

In The Fellowship of the Ring, Arwen tells Aragorn that she would rather live a mortal life with him than an immortal life without him. If you could choose to live for thousands of years without aging too much, would you pick that over a regular human life? Why or why not?

i would rather live a regular human life. the whole point (in my opinion) of being immortal is to have more knowledge than any other being. other than that, being immortal is almost useless. you can never have a family, knowing that they would die long before you. you would have to live through what might be the worst times history has ever seen (and the definition of that seems to change every day). all in all, if you can learn to be knowledgeable in the short life we are granted here on earth, then maybe being immortal isn't so great after all. so i think Arwen deserves a round of applause people! go ahead, clap for the lady!!!

I would rather live my life for thousands of years without getting older because then I would find out what actually happens in the future. Also I would find out what how far science has come through.

Yes I would like to ilve for thousands of years because then I could find out how far science has come through the years. Also I would like to see flying cars in the future if there is such a thing as flying cars.

I think I would rather live a mortal life because it is short and sweet. The short moments in life are better than a long life that never ends. It is better to have a normal life, than living through everyday and of the toughest or miserable times. It is better to live through only one of these miserable times instead of living through many different miserable times that make your whole life miserable. Then you will hate your life and you will want to die, and this will be bad.

I wouldn't like to be immortal. I would have to outlive all of my friends and family and I don't want to lose them. I would only want to be immortal if all of my freinds and family got to be too. Even then, you might be living in a time when the world is in terrible condition and you would still have to live through it for much longer than any human life.

I would rather have a happy mortal life than an immortal life. For one, I think it would be very depressing knowing that you will never die. Plus, if you do something wrong, you are blamed for your mistake for eternity. However in a human life, if you do something wrong people forgive you because they don't want to die with a bad image. In addition, if I lived forever and I had mortal friends, I would have to watch them die, and once I got new friends they would die too. Finally, in Tuck Everlasting the family lives forever and doesn't like it very much. When Tuck falls in love with Winifred he is crestfallen because she doesn't want to be immortal with him. I would not want to experience that. Altogether, I would rather live a good mortal life than an eternal life.
